What is a Home Health Aide?

Home Health Aides are often tasked with observing a patient’s physical and mental health, and reporting on conditions to a Registered Nurse or other Health Care Professionals. Aides work in regular shifts to help you, or your patient, around the home. A Home Health Aide will be your support when you need additional help. Home care aides work under the supervision of a nurse who may or may not be readily available. They also work closely with family members in the provision of care. Both men and women work as home health aides.

How do I know if I need a Home Health Aide?

We all love our independence, it’s one of the perks of being an adult. However, if you are recovering from surgery or finding it harder to move around, there are certain daily activities that we might need help with. An aide can help with a variety of things around the house, for example:

  1. Bathing, dressing, grooming, moving from one place to another, and toileting
  2. Monitoring a condition by checking vital signs such as blood pressure, respiration, and pulse
  3. Light cleaning around the house
  4. Meal planning/preparation suited to your condition and needs
  5. Running errands such as going to the grocery store

How do I know if my patient needs a Home Health Aide?

If you have a patient who is coming out of extensive surgery or you have an elderly patient that may need additional help at home, having an aide will help maintain your patients independence. Here are a few signs to look out for that can help determine if your patient needs that extra help:

  1. Difficulty managing medications
  2. Trouble with upkeeping personal care and hygiene
